The Story Behind the Book
As a young woman, I was enamored by the idea of Wall Street and all the cache that came with it. And because I was so infatuated with Wall Street, I was willfully blind to some of its less positive traits. So I lived in denial and struggled to navigate a system that was highly political, male-dominated, and sexist.
In the early years of my career, I didn’t quite know how to steer clear of obstacles and pitfalls. I often wished that someone would have given me honest advice and tell me straight up how things really were. Instead I received guidance that was politically motivated corporate rhetoric.
Eventually I devised a way to be myself on the job without feeling as though I were selling my soul.
This shift was transformational to me as I began to see each situation more clearly. When I started to see how motives drove everyone’s decisions and behaviors, I began to understand my own motives and what drove my behaviors. This clarity allowed me to evaluate my career with greater objectivity and to choose my actions more strategically.
Once I understood all of this, operating within this environment became much easier and my career started to soar.
It's why I wrote my book, Lose the Gum. I wanted to give every woman every advantage to succeed. You don’t need to make the same mistakes that I’ve made - I’ve already done that for you! Now you can draw lessons from what I’ve learned and avoid the pitfalls and the missteps. Follow this advice and you will find navigating your career will become much easier.
You'll read personal anecdotes and vivid details from my own experience to inform, and hopefully entertain, along the way. Lose the Gum illustrates what challenges you will face in one of the world's toughest industries, and what steps you can take to succeed in spite of them.
It’s worked for me.
It’s worked for everyone who I’ve coached.
And it will work for you, too.
Oh, and one more thing. Before going to an interview, a meeting, or to an event where you’re hoping to impress, please, please, please Lose the Gum!
